Home Chef: Mozzarella-Stuffed Chile Rellenos Burger with Lime Tortilla Chips Review

No Friday night take out for us tonight, but we had something equally as awesome though, cheeseburgers! I was so looking forward to this meal kit from Home Chef because it looked and sounded absolutely delicious. Meat stuffed with cheese? Yes, please!

Total Prep, Cooking and Clean-Up Time:

Prep: 9 Minutes
Cook: 30 Minutes
Total Time: 39 Minutes
Clean Up Time: 10 Minutes

Difficulty Level: Simple

The preparation was fairly simple and quick. Larger items were easily grouped and cut accordingly. Tortillas were stacked and cut into eighths, to form chips. The cheese was quartered. Cilantro was stemmed and minced. A lime was zested, halved and juiced.

Tortilla chips were rubbed with olive oil and baked in the oven for 10-12 minutes. After baking, they were tossed with lime juice, lime zest, olive oil, and ranch seasoning.

A simple sauce was prepared to top the burger, that consisted of pre-packaged mayonnaise, lime juice, lime zest, and minced cilantro.

Four equal ground beef patties were formed. The cheese was placed evenly between two patties and the remaining patties were placed on top of the cheese-topped patties. The burgers were cooked and the provided burger buns were toasted in the oven.

To plate, the burger was placed on the toasted bun, topped with the mayonnaise sauce, cilantro leaves, and pre-packaged crispy jalapenos.

Misguidance/Issues:

Rather than rub the tortillas with olive oil on the baking sheet prior to baking, I simply tossed them with 1 tsp of olive oil in a bowl to save on time. The recipe calls for the tortillas to be roasted in the oven at 400 degrees for 10-12 minutes. I roasted the chips for 9 minutes, and they had already started to burn. The timing or temperature needs to be adjusted.

Forming the ground beef patties was slightly difficult, as the amount of meat was limited at 10oz. The patties did not cook evenly, due to the cheese inside. The recipe called for 3-4 minutes per side on medium heat. I turned the heat up to medium-high and cooked each side an additional 2 minutes to reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees.

Overall Impression:

I did like this meal. I would give it a 3 out of 5 stars. To be excellent, this meal needs a few adjustments. More ground beef needs to be provided in order to form a substantial burger. I thought that the meat itself needed some seasoning, as it was slightly bland. I'd suggest that the amount of sauce be increased so it could be placed on both the burger and the bun to add additional flavor. The buns provided were basic grocery store buns, and I was unimpressed by this. I would suggest they use a brioche bun instead, this would also help with the flavor. Heating adjustments, need to be made on both the tortilla roasting time as well as the burgers.
